Renting? 3 Savvy Storage Solutions

Just because you don’t own your home or have a permanent abode doesn’t mean you can’t be neat and organized in the place you currently hang your hat, says professional organizer Lorie Marrero.

“Even if you are not able to drill holes in the walls, and even if you are always on the move and prefer not to invest in costly storage solutions, there are still plenty of portable and attractive options for you,” says Marrero. “Find those that work best for your needs and can be as portable as you are.”

With the right products and a little creative thinking, adding moveable, functional, attractive and affordable storage can be quite simple for any renter. There are many ways you can implement savvy storage solutions to make the most of your space and situation, such as:

Creative Closet Space

One drawback when renting can be the lack of storage space and the inability to install permanent fixtures in closets. Typically equipped with one rod and a top shelf, rental closets don’t provide the best configurations for maximizing the available area. You can make the most of the limited space with a removable system that securely clips to an existing rod, with accessories like fabric bins and hanging organizers.

Plain View Storage

Colorful storage pieces can enhance existing decor and brighten up the often lackluster neutral walls found in most rentals. Anyone living in an apartment or smaller quarters knows that storage needs to not only look good, but also be completely functional. Add stylish storage to your living space with vibrant cubes that complement your existing décor.

Accessible Areas

Create a system to keep your place tidy. A drop zone, whether in your entryway, kitchen or living area, is a good place to keep your mail, keys, shoes, bags, or whatever you always need readily available. A small bench or colorful coat tree by the door are good options to keep belongings off the floor. Once you’ve gotten your system down, be vigilant about sticking to the plan.

Selling Your Home? Make A Little Color Go A Long Way.

colour-wheel-home-centerantique-homes-and-lifestyle--three-reasons-why-the-color-wheel-gvrdzpqxby Courtney Soinski

When it comes to preparing your home to sell, color is probably one of the most important aspects. As you re-decorate certain rooms throughout your house, use color to your home’s advantage. You’ll attract new buyers and make the best possible first impression during a tour. A little color really CAN go a long way!

First, you need to choose a color scheme. A complementary color scheme is commonly applied to more formal rooms in the house such living rooms and dining rooms. It can include red and green, blue and yellow, or purple and orange. An analogous color scheme is normally found in more casual rooms and includes colors such as yellow and green, blue and violet, or red and orange.

Now for the fun part . . .

Add a pop of red in rooms with cooler hues.

If you’re a fan of cooler hues, consider using a palette of blue-grays with a punch of red.

Make neutral walls stand out.

For light neutral walls, think about going with a soft yellow or pale green as the main color. As long as it has a hint of blue or gray in the hue, it will be an effective neutral. Spice it up by adding a bold yellow throughout the room.

Liven up your white kitchen.

In a mostly white kitchen, try adding a warm, dark gray to highlight different elements in the room while also adding a bold accent of green.

Go wild with a splash of orange.

This can be a tough color to pull off, but it can be done perfectly by getting rid of that extra visual clutter like trinkets and tchotchkes. Paint it on one or two walls and then pair the orange with neutral shades to even it out.

Get a good sleep with shades of purple.

Does your bedroom need some spicing up? Purple is a great color to use because it has a calming effect to help you get a soothing sleep. Mix these pops of purple with warm whites or grays.

3 Luxurious Trends in Bathroom Comfort

Main2-Bathroom_TrendsBy Sarah Kellner

Whether you are planning on adding some luxurious updates to your home in anticipation of selling, or you just bought a new home and want to maximize your comfort, bathroom upgrades are the way to go. From bath time with your kids to getting ready for work in the morning, to unwinding at the end of a long day with a hot bath, you probably spend more time in the bathroom than you realize.

The bathroom is one of those rooms that’s easy to overlook when thinking about extras. Do you have a shower curtain? Check. Bath mat, towels and toothbrush holder? Check, check and check. And a lot of the time, that’s where it stops. There are, however, a good number of upgrades you can make to turn the location of your rushed morning routine into an enjoyable place to start the day.

Here are some luxurious updates you can make to your bathroom:

Towel Warmers

One of the simplest modifications you can make to your bathroom to swap out your plain towel rack for a towel warmer rack. These electric warmers have enough room and power to warm a full set of bath, hand and face towels while using less power than the average light bulb running on 110 volts. All you have to do is mount it or place it on the floor, plug it in, and flip the switch to the “On” position when you’re ready to use it.

Towel warmer racks not only warm towels, but they can bring your clothing and blankets to a nice toasty temperature, as well. Furthermore, these handy racks also dry towels post-use, which helps eliminate smells and keep bathrooms mildew free.

Radiant Heat Floors

While ceramic and porcelain tile is attractive and easy to clean, it also gets downright chilly, especially in the winter months. Imagine waking up in the morning and instead of shuffling along the shockingly cold tile, your feet are welcomed by warmth. When you splurge on radiant heat floors for your bathroom, you can have this level of comfort and luxury whenever you wish.

In the installation process, your electrician and tile installer will work together to lay heating cables which interlace with mesh mats and sandwich between layers of thinset. Then they cover it with ceramic, porcelain or stone tile. Some heating systems even offer a programmable thermostat which will preheat the floor for you every morning before you even leave your bed.

Entertainment Systems

The bathroom is usually not the first room most people think of when they plan for high definition TVs and surround sound systems, but these devices are no longer strictly for living rooms and man caves. Today’s best bathrooms are wired for media junkies so you can watch the morning news while you shave, listen and sing along to your favorite songs while you shower, and never have to miss a minute of the big game again.

These are just a few of the luxurious updates you can make to your bathroom, raising the value for potential buyers or making your new home that much more exciting for you and your family. What are some other indulging upgrades you’ve considered?
