Kitchen Design Goes Global!

Every great kitchen starts with great design. Whether you favor contemporary or traditional styles, kitchen trends today draw inspiration from global sources. You can incorporate all different cultural influences from around the world while balancing the practical needs of your family. To add worldly flair to your kitchen, start by:

Getting Fancy with Flooring

Certain materials establish a regional look because they are widely available in that region. In India, where quarries make natural stones easily affordable, kitchens commonly feature floors of glossy marble or other stone. Ceramic tile is abundant in Spain, and a wide variety of styles are available to create the underpinning for any regionally-inspired kitchen design.

Paving the Way with Walls

Kitchens around the world have signature design elements when it comes to walls. Wood paneling is a hallmark of English country kitchens, while modern Japanese kitchens, which are often limited in space, are made to look larger with walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. And arches and bright tile accents lend themselves to Mexican design.

Opening Up with Cabinetry

The material and color you choose for your cabinets will play a defining role in the overall appearance of your kitchen. Flat white or frosted glass doors can impart a very modern, European flair, while distressed woods in rustic hues create a Tuscan effect.

Coloring Your World

Specific colors are tied to certain world cultures, regions and locations – walls in a soft mandarin paired with burgundy window treatments can build an Asian-inspired backdrop, and Aegean blue and sand backsplash tiles speak of a subtle Mediterranean influence.

Home Design Predictions that are Coming to Life

By Courtney Soinski and Edgard Negron

Every year marks the beginning of a deluge of home trend predictions. The home design experts start throwing out their predictions faster than we can read them. However, not everything that is predicted during this stampede of trends actually makes it into our homes.

A quarter of the way into 2015 and we are starting to see many of this year’s trends come to life, the ones that you have embraced and brought into your homes.  From indoor container gardening to mixing wood and metal, 2015 is all about creating an experience for yourself and your guests.  By far, our favorite trend of 2015 is mixing modern with rustic accents in order to make your home both trendy and inviting.

Notice that I used the word “accents.”  There is no need to make major changes to your modern décor.  Simply adding a rustic wood footstool such as the one pictured here, can drastically change the look and feel of your room for the better.

It was also predicted that we would see more organic elements incorporated throughout many homes. Bringing nature into your home has been very popular in 2015, which includes free flowing shapes, colors found in nature, and the feeling of peaceful serenity that is associated with the outdoors. You can create an “outdoorsy” feel in your home just by mixing earthy components against wooden furniture or using ivory tones throughout various rooms.

In addition, copper touches have also come to life this year in the real estate market. Increasingly, many homeowners are including copper accents in their home, and it’s especially popular among many top designers. By displaying copper cookware in your kitchen or copper pieces in light fixtures or planters, you’ll add a touch of glamour without going over the top.

These are just a few of the design predictions that have come to life in 2015. As the year progresses, be sure to keep your eye out for even more hot design trends. They may even be a part of your own home’s design!
